R34-3 The -3-means it is a 3 foot bury depth. Which means 3 feet of the pipe will be below ground leaving about 26 inches of pipe above ground plus the red hydrant part about 7 more inches. So the top of the hydrant should be about 33 inches above ground. 2 foot bury depth would be the r34-2, 4 foot bury depth is R34-4, etc.. I bought a house with some cheap chinese hydrants that had only been installed a few years ago. One of them failed, then another. I replaced both of those and a third with woodford hydrants. I like to be frugal and get a good deal, but sometimes it is just worth it to spend more and not have to worry about problems. Spend the money and buy these quality hydrants and never worry about it again. They are quality american made products (woodford says 90 percent u.s. content). Don't go cheap on hydrants or you'll regret it 5 years from now when you have to dig through the frozen soil to fix or replace them in the dead of winter. These are not made with any plastic parts and I expect them to be trouble free for a long time. When you bury them make sure to put gravel all around the base of they hydrant so that when you shut it off the water can drain out of the pipe down into the ground. I don't know if it is the right thing to do but along with gravel I buried a bucket upside down close to the base of the hydrant to give the water a sure place to go when it drains. That is what keeps the pipe from freezing and allows you to use these even in negative temperatures.
